Crinan Boatyard is a registered CORGI installer.
To retain registration, each
registered engineer has to attend a certified gas course and gain the marine endorsement every five years. Engineers
also have to be re-registered annually. Their work is inspected and they are orally tested during random unannounced
visits by CORGI examiners
CORGI was founded in 1970 as the Confederation for the Registration of Gas Installers, and was given the task of ensuring
that gas work was carried out safely. In 1991 the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) asked CORGI to maintain
a register of competent gas installers in the UK. CORGI became the 'Council for Registered Gas Installers'. CORGI's responsibilities
have now extended to include Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man.
Registration is now a legal requirement for businesses and self-employed people working on gas fittings
or appliances. Around 44,000 gas installation businesses employing approximately 95,000 gas fitting operatives are currently
registered.
CORGI works to a tight remit prescribed by the HSE, as well as operating the register of competent gas installers.
